"Heavy Metal isn't dominating the world right now because of stupid, whiny fucking idiots arguing with each other over nothing. Heavy Metal is Metal, I don't care if it's black, thrash, death or grind" ~Jackie Slaughter, Skull Fist
There was only Rock & Roll when I was growing up, Punk and New Wave came before I was out of my teen years. I have also seen the rise of Heavy Metal, Thrash, Grunge, etc. Despite my preferences in Rock music, I don't hate any of it. Emo or Screamo I won't listen to, and some Nu Metal I like. But see, I was raised on Rock & Roll, when none of her extreme offspring had yet to be born. Back then, you may have had your favorite bands, but none of the rampant infighting seen today in Rock music today, more specifically in Metal.
My heart is in Heavy Metal, and I want nothing more than to see it become the dominant musical art form both here in the U.S. and around the world. Yet the fans who claim to love it may be the ones to sabotage it's future successes. Abraham Lincoln once said "a house divided against itself cannot stand". It is a truism that has proved itself time and time again. While Metal bands and fans tear each other apart, Hip Hop, R&B and Pop grow stronger. The global economy is already in shambles, and sales of cd's and mp3's are down. Still, Metal (and indeed Rock & Roll in general) can't seem to ascend to that pinnacle that even Country music has laid a sizable claim to.
Look, you don't have to like all of it. What I'm saying here is we need an us against them attitude when it comes to Metal. You know like how you have a little brother who keeps screwing up his life, but if anyone puts a hand on him, you'll lay them out? That's how we should be with one another. So wave your Metal flag high, and the next time some Hip Hopper says they can't stand Slipknot, you tell 'em "I can't stand them either, but I'll defend to the death their right to play their kind of Metal"!
